D45 – HLT Update

Whelp… we are now 45 days into this rollercoaster of a transplant journey. That’s six weeks of high adventure, every emotion possible (some I never want to experience again), and new life experiences and friendships made.

I point this out because today, it feels like light is at the end of this tunnel for the first time. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not even close to being done, but today Latasha got to have some freedom, and we had a typical day, if there is such a thing in a hospital setting.

Tasha seems to be turning the corner on her nausea. She was able to get some soup and shakes down today, which helped with her energy level. We walked quite a bit and racked up a lot of steps. I lost count because I was being silly, but I’m pretty sure we hit a mile again between all our adventures.

The doctors decided to change her Heparin IV to a subcutaneous injection, so no more dragging around a pump on a pole. They also put her last chest drainage tube onto a small suction bulb to give her complete freedom of movement.

So cheers to our upcoming hospital roaming adventures!

What does this mean for discharge? Nothing right now because the consortium of doctors and experts (transplant, thoracic, respiratory, heart, lung, vascular, nutrition, pharmacy, social worker, outpatient care, etc) are still discussing the best path forward. But that’s okay; safety over speed and slow and steady is fast.

So, a great day means great spirits and smiles—a day full of small wins!
