The Dust is Settling (a bit)

Today, Latasha and I had a marathon of doctor appointments at Cleveland Clinic, where we met with one of the surgeons on her transplant team. The discussion concluded with feeling better about their decision to abort the transplant and that they all deeply care about their duty and commitment to Latasha.
The other thing that has become painfully clear is our care and transplant plan didn’t survive first contact. This is primarily because you cannot account for the raw emotions one goes through in the moment. The truth is no one can be prepared for it.
What is clear now is that we have to go back to the drawing board for a better financial plan and a more long-term solution.
For example, when Tasha got admitted into the pre-op, I checked into the hotel on the main campus (a 5-minute walk across the Skywalk to be at the ICU) so we could have a home base for the first two weeks. To my shock, the bill was $4,200 for 14 nights, and that was with the transplant rate. There are only three hotels near the main campus, and they all offer a transport rate with a variance of $60.
So we’re relooking at everything to find a better solution for her caregivers’ convenience, safety (many areas around Cleveland Clinic are unsafe), and long-term financial sense. Air B&B is a likely option, but not always a guarantee the one we need in the area we need will be free.
The Transplant House is still a viable option at $70 a night, but it can only accommodate two people and isn’t an excellent location for all needs.
If you’re following our story, I would ask that you keep sharing it to help advocate for donations to Latasha so we can get through a 3 to 4-month post-operative window.
