Transplant Update 3

After a much-needed nap and deep reflection, I can provide a more in-depth update.

The short of the long is that Latasha is stable but will have to go back into the OR sometime Thursday, and the road will likely be a bit bumper than hoped.

To understand this, you must understand Tasha’s medical journey and condition. Without going all medical dictionary on you, and even if I wanted to, I’m still too tired; she has been struggling through this for 44 years. That’s a long time for the body to build up shortcuts and compensations for her failing heart and lungs.

All that said, she had a lot of bleeding and tissue that didn’t want to let go of the old for the new. That caused massive swelling, blood loss, and fluid retention, which made the only course of action for the surgical team to leave her chest open until all the swelling goes down and fluid comes off, also known as an Open-chest management (OCM) with subsequent delayed sternal closure (DSC).

She is stable, but this slides her recovery start line to the right, as until the chest is closed, she must stay in a medical coma and rest. I promised Tasha I would document the good and the bad; because of that, I am posting a picture of her post-op.

As her husband and best friend, it pained me more than anything I ever experienced in life to see the woman I love lying there like that. The rawness of the entire journey came to a head.

Tasha’s fight and strength are clearly on display, as Tasha is the strongest woman I know. I plan on elaborating on that later, but in the meantime, please continue to pray for her and keep her in your thoughts.

All we can do is wait until Thursday and see what comes next. More to follow soon.
